		Pump Action Shotguns The pump actions shotgun was really popular in the 1950s to around the 1980s. The reason the pump action was so popular is that it was so much cheaper than a semi automatic shotgun. The pump action shotgun was also a lot lighter than a semi automatic and didn't jam up. Semi automatic shotguns have improved a lot and most people prefer them to a pump. The cost is still higher, but people seem to be willing to pay it. As a sidenote, someone that really knows how to use a pump action well will be able to nearly keep up with the semi automatic. The increased speed of a semi automatic is negligible. Most pump action operators are not very skilled and thus the semi automatic is much better for them.
