Duck Hunting

Duck hunting has its special place in many peoples heart. The thing about ducks is that there are a lot of them. When you set up a blind close to a pond or lake, you can hear their wingbeats right on top of your head. Then, you can hear the whistles of the wings as they change directions and come in for a landing. The sight and sounds are amazing.

Then, it is fun to use the duck call. You can pretend that your little decoys are eating. If the ducks fly away, you can even yell at them to come back with a loud call. Sometimes the ducks will actually turn around and come right back with a good call.

When hunting ducks, you will also need a good water dog. The dog is a big part of what makes it fun. Some dogs will actually dive under water looking for wounded ducks. A good dog will sit quietly with you and wait for the exact right moment to go and retrieve for you.

There are many ducks that will get wounded that you can never get unless you have a good dog. You just can't run fast enough or get into the water the same as a good water dog.

If you want a good tasting duck, don't go for Coots or Mud Ducks. They will actually taste like mud. You should go for ducks that have been grazing in nearby corn fields or on asparagus or wild celery. These ducks will taste much better.

The other thing about duck hunting is the appreciation of the variety of ducks. Ducks are very colorful and come in many varieties. Consider how beautiful a wood duck or a drake mallard is.
