Bird Hunting Conservation

You may not know it, but bird hunters are known for protecting wildlife all across America. Bird hunters learn to appreciate the beauty of birds. They learn the calls that the birds make, their migrating patterns, their wingbeats, and their plumage. There are many more factors that bird hunters learn about birds. Because bird hunters learn to love birds, they instinctually seek to protect them. There are bird refuges all around the country that are supported by bird hunters.

One of the most famous organizations that promotes bird conservation is Ducks Unlimited. This organization goes in and makes nesting sites for birds and promotes protection where it is needed. Ducks unlimited keeps up on trends in waterfowl management and seeks money through auctions and fundraisers to help support the cause. The other fun thing about Ducks Unlimited is that you will make a lot of friends there to go hunting with.

Birds need to be protected. Birds can be over hunted and just plain have bad years from pest populations and the weather. It is important that someone cares a lot about the birds takes responsibility for conservation. Part of being responsible is to follow hunting laws. You should only hunt in season and only for the game you are licensed for. The purpose of the laws is to protect the wildlife.

Many of us remember the days when the limit for pheasants was around 14. Nowadays, due to modern farming practices and the increase in rodents like possums and raccoons and magpies, pheasant populations are much lower. To help manage the lower number of birds, the pheasant limit is now one or two birds. Many companies and organizations have tried to increase the number of pheasants around the world. Part of being responsible is to follow your bird limit and to help in preserving areas that is good habitat for pheasants. These birds need more cover to hide in, abundant food sources, and less predators. A farmer leaving up a few fields of alfalfa or corn can go a long way in providing these resources to pheasants. Some hunters that are truly interested in conservation will pay a farmer to keep the field from being harvested and then the birds have a safe place to go with abundant food. It also makes for better hunting years down the road.
