Bird Hunting

Many people think hunting is all about big game like Deer and Elk. It is true that more people hunt deer and elk than birds, but it is also true that bird hunting can be a lot more fun.

Bird Hunting and Dogs

Bird hunting has a lot to do with the dogs. People that love dogs will like bird hunting because the bird hunting creates a special bond between dog and owner. Rather than taking your dog for a walk at the city park, your dog can get out and get some real exercise and excitement. After a while, you will see the dog look forward to hunting season. When you start packing for a hunt, the dog will know and become very excited. Many dogs will come and sleep right next to their owner so that they can get up the first second their owner gets up. The dogs do not want to be left behind.

Bird Dogs Need Training

A good bird hunting dog will require a significant amount of training. You will need to teach them to retrieve, to come to you when called, to have a soft grip with the mouth, to point out birds, to hold their point, not to go out too far, and to stay.

A good dog can follow your audible or your hand signals. Some dogs can know to go right or left by simply watching your hands. They can also respond to “silent” dog whistles. By the time you get your dog trained, you will be very close to them.

To train a good bird dog, only requires about 15 minutes per day. The dogs catch on quickly. The key is to consistently work with them. Then, you should have outings now and then where you spend a large part of the day with the dog.

Dogs that are allowed indoors, with the family, will gain more vocabulary and be easier to train. They can't speak English, but they pick up on a lot of things that you may not realize. One of our dogs would bark when you said come in because they knew that meant someone was at the door.

Hunting Supplies

Hunting is like camping. There are a lot of items you need to make it work out well. If you aren't missing something major than the trip usually is a lot of fun.

With hunting birds, you will need a shotgun, shotgun shells, and a vehicle. If you at least have these items the hunt can happen.

To make the hunt more fun, you will want to dress appropriately. You will need a good pair of boots to keep out stickers and to keep your feet dry. You will want to dress in bright colors so that other hunters can see you.

In cold weather hunts, do not skimp on warm clothing. Many hunts are colder than anything you ever imagined. You might be laying on the ground, get soaking wet, or suffer from other ailments. The main thing to do is to dress in layers and overdo it a little. You can always take a few layers off.

What Kind of Shotgun Does a Bird Hunter Need

Most people prefer a 12 gauge shotgun. Our personal favorite shotgun is a side by side or also known as double barrel. The reason is that they are lighter to carry and have a superior line of sight.

Younger hunters or women will like to start out with a 20 gauge shotgun because the recoil will be much less.

What Plants do Birds Like Most?

Without a doubt, a cornfield is the easiest way to attract birds. Sometimes farmers will leave up a cornfield late in the year and many birds from the area will all be tucked into that one field. The reason is that the corn is sweet and tasty to birds. Many farmers and preserves will leave up a corn field to attract the birds for a pheasant hunt.

Many other animals will also be attracted to the corn. Deer may come down from the mountains at night and sit in the cornfield and eat corn all day long. Skunks and raccoons will also hang out in the cornfields.

What Kind of Dog Should a Bird Hunter Have?

There is no exact kind of dog to have. You can even have a regular mix dog. Most hunters have a labrador, golden retriever, German shorthair, or a springer spaniel. The German shorthair is primarily for pointing. The other dogs are also good water dogs. Since you need a dog to retrieve the birds for you and to sniff them out, these breeds work well because they naturally like to retrieve. Some other dog breeds have to be trained to retrieve and don't get too excited about it. These dogs also have a good coat for water and can swim well. These factors are important for duck and goose hunting.

What Kind of Vehicles Should a Bird Hunter Have

Without a doubt, hunters, of all kinds, like to have a truck. A truck will allow you to go off road. Going off road is necessary to find good places to hunt. Many of the best hunting areas are out of the way and difficult to get too. It is also fun to go off roading while hunting.

A four wheeler is also an item that is highly valued. There are many places a truck can't go. Suppose you go goose hunting. Do you want to walk back and forth to the truck that is five miles down the road to set up or would you rather load it all on the four wheeler. In reality, people aren't going to walk a long ways carrying heavy loads. The four wheeler opens up many more options for hunting. The other factor is that it is just plain fun to drive the four wheeler.

A small duck or goose boat is also a good item to have. You may find that you want to go out and set up a blind in a marsh or on a small lake. A small boat will open up more options to you. Nowadays, people like to float down rivers hunting ducks and geese.

Duck and Goose Blinds

A blind is a good idea for hunting ducks and geese next to the water. They can spot you a mile away. To build a blind, you can dig down and create a dugout (like in baseball) that is next to the water. The ducks and geese will fly over you and won't see you. This type of blind is only reasonable if you can come back to the same spot every year.

You can also purchase blinds from the store that are basically some netting that you stand up. These blinds are portable and only take a few minutes to stand up. Think about the military nets that are used to hide soldiers. It is the same idea.

Final Tip

Hunting is more about the people and the dogs than how many birds you come back with! Look for ways to make it fun even if you come back empty handed.
